The shepherd who searches for one sheep
On why the parable isn’t about arithmetic, but about the fact that the ninety-nine are left unattended for the sake of the one that is lost.

Do the math, and the shepherd’s action in the parable looks reckless: leave ninety-nine in the wilderness to go after one. But the parable was never about arithmetic.
It’s about the fact that in God’s accounting there is no “acceptable loss.” The lost sheep isn’t a percentage in a statistic — it is a particular one, with a recognizable voice.
What this means for us
Most often we go missing not through sin but through the ordinary: unnoticed, gradually, with the sense that everything is more or less fine. And we, too, are sought unnoticed — through someone who called at the wrong moment, and exactly the right one.
This week, try being the one who searches. Think of someone who’s slipped out of the community’s sight, and simply ask how they are.
